Biography: Derek Alexander Jones (DIY Blackman)
Derek Alexander Jones, born August 31, 1983, is a Chicago-born wellness coach, public speaker, educator, and the visionary behind DIY Blackman — a transformative platform rooted in spiritual growth, healing, and empowerment. Once convicted of second-degree murder in Chicago in 2015, Derek was sentenced to 13 years in prison. During his incarceration, he began a deep inner journey of self-reclamation.
After his release, Derek committed to a radical reinvention of self. Rejecting the systems and beliefs that had once defined him, he turned to farming, nature-based spirituality, and self-study to find clarity and purpose. Through these practices, he developed a healing model that now forms the foundation of DIY Blackman — a platform that supports formerly incarcerated Black men in reconnecting with their dignity, inner wisdom, and ability to thrive.
Derek teaches life skills, self-awareness, entrepreneurship, confidence building, and emotional literacy — combining real-world experience with ancestral knowledge and a vision for liberation.
Today, he helps others transform pain into power, using his story as living proof that redemption is not only possible — it’s revolutionary.
